SUSTAINABLE HYBRID RAILWAY SLEEPER
Greenway Rail has developed a hybrid sustainable sleeper that utilises ocean-bound recycled plastic, end of life vehicle tyres, and green concrete manufactured from industrial waste.
The design incorporates a recycled plastic hollow extrusion. Rail housings are installed in the extrusion prior to the core being filled with green concrete, casting the rail housings in place. Indents are pressed into the sides of the sleeper to increase stability within the ballast. An under sleeper pad made from end of life tyres is bonded to the base of the sleeper to increase the life of the ballast and create a smoother ride with reduced vibration and noise.
The sleeper meets Greenway Rail’s sustainability principles by significantly reducing virgin materials, and using recycled and industrial waste materials. Maintenance costs are reduced with fixed housings and the under-sleeper pad. Construction of the sleeper is more sustainable compared to OPC cement or hardwood sleepers. The service life is significantly greater than wooded sleepers, matching OPC cement sleepers, and increasing the service life of the ballast. The sleeper is suitable for a range of standard installations including passenger and freight. Production and maintenance result in reduced carbon emissions and a reduction in global warming.
